The other day we got to play a couple of rounds of 7 Wonders with the Leaders expansion, courtesy of my buddy Andrew. There were some things I liked about and some things I didn”t care so much for.

First, the leaders themselves are pretty cool. At the beginning of the game, you have an extra draft phase wherein you will get four leaders, three of which you”ll be able to play during the course of the game, one at the start of each age. Like with the regular cards, leaders can be discarded for three coins, used to build your wonder, or played face up for their ability. Each one gives a bonus of some kind either during the game or at the end as a points boost. Their abilities are varied enough to be interesting, but not so crazy as to be confusing after a quick glance at the rulebook. Obviously, you want to go for leaders that have some synergy together, but you can still hate (pick one just so your opponents can”t) a leader which would be powerful against you, and just dump it on your wonder.

As for what I didn”t like, I feel that maybe this expansion is gilding the lily a bit. The added time isn’t much, but it is added time, and one great thing about this game is that it pretty much always goes for 30 minutes. And in the gaming world, there really is a big difference between 30 and 40 minutes play time. Also the leaders make an already pretty random game even more random. Which guilds are included in each game can make a big difference amongst evenly matched competitors. Which leaders are in (as you won”t use all of them each time) only adds to that. The more I play 7 Wonders, the more I”m realizing I like it better with fewer players, to keep the game much more tactical and help reduce the luck factor – something I”m not looking to increase necessarily with Leaders. Finally, while it is not a difficult expansion to use or explain, there is something elegant about the simplicity of the base game I wouldn”t want to lose with the addition of the extra phases.
Don”t get me wrong: I feel like this is a really well done expansion and if what you are looking for in your 7 Wonders is more time playing 7 Wonders, than this is a no-brainer. Whether I feel I need to pick it up or not remains to be seen.
Who am I kidding? I”m a completionist. I”ll get it even if I never want to play it. Woe is me.
