It is time once again for a special request post, this time from my lovely and talented sister-in-law Briget who linked me a while back on her Tumblr with the following comment/semi-request/musing:

I feel like there should be a special post of his closet of board games, because it is amazing.

Well here it is! I have… a good number of games. Compared to the average person, I have an enormous number, but compared to the average BGG user, my 250 or so titles is probably a bit low. My games live on four bookshelves in a walk-in closet in our guest/gaming/art room. The shelves themselves are cheap but sturdy Target-ware.

Left: Days of Wonder, Queen, various others. Right: The main shelf.

The RPG shelf. Hundreds of
pounds of Monster Manuals.

I have everything organized by publisher with three shelves for board and card games and one for RPGs, and on top of one of the shelves you can see some of my wife”s puzzles. There are also some SUPER nerdy posters up on the walls (recognize any of them?)

On one of the shelves you”ll notice an empty spot (where Stone Age [review coming soon!] goes): I try to lend out games to friends whenever they ask. Lending games is a great way to get people excited. They in turn buy games and more money enters the industry, encouraging publishers to come out with even more great games! If you are the game buyer in your group, make sure you lend some out too. Your friends will find something they’ll want to pick up as well.

In today”s quick post, I”m going to talk briefly about three games in various states of printing/being released/on their way to the stores which are on my radar as possible future purchases. When I look for new games, I usually do all of my research online before ordering. I check out marketing material from the company publishing the game, reviews on BGG and F:AT, and read the rulebook (most companies now post rulebooks for their games online for free.)

Tiny, yet noble.

The first game is Mice and Mystics from Plaid Hat Games. This unreleased game is a story driven semi-RPG board game in which our heroes have been transformed into mice by an evil spell. In their new tiny forms they must escape the castle running from huge spiders, giant centipedes, and of course the cat. This one sounds like it could be really cool and different from anything I have in my collection.

The new second edition
evolved from the first one.

The second game piquing my interest is Descent: Journeys in the Dark, Second Edition. This dungeon-crawler is (shock!) the sequel to the equally beloved and behated first edition of Descent by Fantasy Flight Games. Information has been dribbling out on this one, but it seems that they may have fixed many of the complaints about the first edition (long play time, busted combos, the need for endless errata, etc.) Lets just hope they did it without taking away the game”s soul.

Mmmm, another delicious
brown board game…

The last one I”m keeping an eye on is Divided Republic. This is a card driven game in the same vein as Twilight Struggle and 1960: The Making of the President, BUT unlike those two games, THIS game supports four players rather than just two as the players take on the roles of the four major candidates involved in the 1860 presidential election (John Bell, John Breckinridge, Stephen Douglas, and some guy named Abraham Lincoln.) I have only played 1/2 of a game of Twilight Struggle, but I really enjoyed it. I LOVE 1960. This game looks like it might be right up my alley.

Dark Days Ahead.

The folks over at Rio Grande Games have announced a new expansion for Dominion called Dark Ages. It appears to be a whopper, weighing in at 500 cards in 35 different kingdom card decks with no reprinted starter cards (copper, estates, etc.) There”s even a bit of info on the themes and mechanics:

…new bad cards you give to other players (Ruins), new cards to replace starting Estates (Shelters), and cards you can only get via specific other cards. The central themes are the trash and upgrading. There are cards that do something when trashed, cards that care about the trash, cards that upgrade themselves, and ways to upgrade other cards.

If you”re not tired of spending all of you hard earned lucre on what was supposed to be NOT another CCG, then this 7th expansion could be pretty cool and should shake up the game if it is feeling a bit stale. Ahh, Dominion, when will you quit sucking the bills out of my wallet like a powerful hoover?
